The word 'kundan' means highly refined 24k pure gold. Jewellery garners its name from the skilled craftsmanship involved in encasing flat diamonds using layers 24 karat pure gold foil, this is a form of art called jadayi, henceforth also known as jadau jewellery. The craftsmanship that goes into Kundan pieces is extremely intricate.
The pieces are hand finished by skilled artisans, which takes countless hours of labor. It takes anywhere between one and two months to create a small piece of kundan jewellery, depending on the craftsmanship and intricacy of the design.
With a history spanning over 2,500 years, kundan jewellery is one of the oldest forms of jewellery in India. The method is believed to have originated in the royal courts of Rajasthan and Gujarat and further flourished under the royal patronage of the Mughal era. You can see traces of the art and craftsmanship that characterized the Mughal and Rajput eras in this type of jewellery today. Nizam, the richest man of his time, had a huge collection of kundan jewellery.
